When it comes to exploring the world of Ethel Cain, the doomed fictional character created by Hayden Silas Anhed\u00f6nia, the singer-songwriter is far from finished.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old\u2019s 2022 debut album Preacher\u2019s Daughter<\/em> is steeped in atmospheric Southern Gothic storytelling, following Ethel as she leaves an oppressive religious upbringing behind, only to find herself grappling with violence and exploitation that culminate in her being murdered and cannibalized by her lover.<\/p>\n

However, that wasn\u2019t the end of Ethel\u2019s story. In a new Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> profile, Anhed\u00f6nia revealed that she\u2019s currently working on an EP about the character\u2019s high school years, which is set to release later this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like [this EP] is truly laying Ethel Cain to rest,\u201d she said of the project.<\/p>\n

On her debut album, titled Preacher\u2019s Daughter<\/em>, the artist chased more than a compelling collection of songs. She sought to make the next Great American Record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Anhed\u00f6nia intends for Preacher\u2019s Daughter<\/em> to be the first in an intergenerational trilogy of albums. According to Rolling Stone<\/em>, she\u2019s moving away from her current city of Pittsburgh<\/a> and will be \u201cchasing brutal winters\u201d to match the tone of her next full-length album, which will focus on Ethel\u2019s mother \u201cgrappling with her daughter\u2019s death.\u201d After that, she plans to write an album about Ethel\u2019s grandmother.<\/p>\n

In a 2022 interview with Alt Press<\/em><\/a>, Anhed\u00f6nia described her three-album project as \u201ca classic American tale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA common theme that I like to write about is intergenerational trauma<\/a>. Things that have been passed down through generations and how your parents\u2019 or your grandparents\u2019 actions can affect you,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s very much about this lineage of women and how all their lives interconnect. Each album focuses on a different woman. I want to explore how your actions affect others and the relationship between a mother and her child and how things come full circle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Anhed\u00f6nia is undoubtedly one of the most exciting rising trans musicians out there, she emphasized to Rolling Stone<\/em> that her gender identity is just one element of her personal approach to music-making.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you are trans, you are living a very specific experience that not many other people in the world have,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to not be known as a trans artist, I think, not because I didn\u2019t want people to know I was trans, or because I didn\u2019t want to be proud of that fact\u2026 It has shaped the way that I am in certain ways, but it\u2019s not everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
