\n\tEntertainment, sports and brand licensing firms WildBrain CPLG<\/strong> and WildBrain Ltd<\/strong>. have brokered location-based entertainment (LBE) deals on behalf of Peanuts Worldwide for \u201cPeanuts,\u201d \u201cTeletubbies\u201d and \u201cIn the Night Garden\u201d with China\u2019s Max-Matching Entertainments<\/strong>. These are expected to lead to the opening of family entertainment centers and IP-themed hotel rooms for each brand in Beijing, in\u00a0Zhongshan City, Guangdong and\u00a0a third city yet to be announced. These will roll out over the next five years.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe moves come at a time when WildBrain CPLG is expanding its Asia-focused teams. These include the Los Angeles-based veteran licensing executive, Kevin Suh<\/strong> who is former president of themed entertainment & consumer products at Paramount Pictures<\/strong>. Suh was also a senior executive at the Motion Picture Association of America and a lawyer in California. Shanghai-based Evi Sari<\/strong> joins as VP of LBE in APAC and the GCC. She was previously VP of LBE at Paramount <\/strong>(ViacomCBS), responsible for building partnerships for Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, MTV and CBS in Asia. She reports to WildBrain CPLG\u2019s EVP & MD, Maarten Weck.<\/p>\n

FESTIVAL<\/h3>\n

\n\tInternational South Asian Film Festival<\/strong> (Sept. 28 \u2013 Oct. 1), which takes place in Surrey, British Columbia (Canada), is returning with a new identity. Festival highlights include a 10th anniversary screening of Ritesh Batra<\/strong>\u2018s acclaimed \u201cThe Lunchbox\u201d with the filmmaker in attendance; Zarrar Kahn<\/strong>\u2018s Canadian-Pakistani supernatural thriller, \u201cIn Flames,\u201d which premiered at Cannes and will play at Toronto; and \u201cCOMPLEXion\u201d, a documentary about the stigmas and taboos surrounding skin color, featuring former Miss America, Nina Davuluri<\/strong>. This screening is followed by a discussion on beauty standards in the South Asian community.<\/p>\n

\n\tArtistic director Pulkit Datta said: \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly excited to present \u2018Pathbreakers\u2019 as our festival theme this year. Our aim is to provide a platform for the voices and stories of South Asia and its diaspora to be enjoyed by the BC audience and beyond. SHINE A LIGHT
<\/h3>\n

\n\tShine Global<\/strong>, the nonprofit media company dedicated to producing and supporting impactful documentaries about children\u2019s issues, has announced the nominees for its Children\u2019s Resilience in Film Awards<\/strong>.\u00a0The awards, now in their second year, honor exceptional films that center around the resilience of children in the face of adversity. They aim to shed light on stories of courage, strength and determination that children demonstrate in challenging circumstances. The films not only inspire audiences but also help create awareness and promote positive change in society.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe nominees are: \u201cAurora\u2019s Sunrise,\u201d\u00a0directed by Inna Sahakyan (2022, Armenia, Germany, Lithuania); \u201cBigman,\u201d directed by Camiel Schouwenaar (2022, The Netherlands, Germany); \u201cChildren of Las Brisas,\u201ddirected by Marianela Maldonado (2022, Venezuela); \u201cName Me Lawand,\u201d\u00a0directed by Edward Lovelace (2022, U.K.); and \u201cThe Ordinaries,\u201d\u00a0directed by Sophie Linnenbaum (2022, Germany).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe winner will be named and awarded $15,000 at a ceremony on Oct. 3 at Paramount Pictures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

RETURNING TO THE SCENE<\/h3>\n

\n\tNetflix <\/strong>has given a subdued launch to \u201c6ixtynin9 The Series,\u201d<\/strong> a six-episode crime series that is an expansion of 1999 hit Thai film \u201c6ixtynin9.\u201d Both the film and the remake are directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang<\/strong>. The setup involves a desperate young woman to whom a huge bundle of cash is accidentally delivered \u2013 her apartment number lost one of its fixing screws and rotated half a turn from six to nine \u2013 and who kills the crooks who try to retrieve the money. The production, by Five Star Production<\/strong>, has an all-new cast headed by regional star Devika Hoorne<\/strong> (\u201cHeart Attack\u201d \/ \u201cFreelance\u201d and \u201cPee Mak\u201d).<\/p>\n

OSCAR COMMITTEE<\/h3>\n

\n\tThe Pakistani Academy Selection Committee<\/strong>, which chooses the country\u2019s candidate in the Academy Awards\u2019 international feature category, is chaired this year by filmmaker Mohammed Ali Naqvi (\u201cTurning Point: 9\/11 and the War on Terror\u201d). Committee members include filmmakers Saim Sadiq<\/strong> (Oscar-shortlisted \u201cJoyland\u201d); Bilal Lashari (\u201cThe Legend of Maula Jatt\u201d); Haya Fatima Iqbal (\u201cA Girl In The River\u201d); Madeeha Syed (\u201cThe Accused: Damned or Devoted?\u201d); Mehreen Jabbar\u00a0(\u201cJurm\u201d); actors Fawad Khan<\/strong> (\u201cThe Legend of Maula Jatt\u201d) and Ahmed Ali Akbar\u00a0(\u201cParizaad\u201d); actor and filmmaker Nadia Afgan (\u201cCircus of Life\u201d); and author Fatima Bhutto<\/strong> (\u201cThe Shadow of the Crescent Moon\u201d). <\/p>\n

FAILED BREXIT<\/h3>\n

\n\tThe ongoing failure of the U.K.\u2019s departure from the European Union, known as Brexit<\/strong>, is starkly underlined in a new survey of music creators by representative body U.K. Music<\/strong>. The survey received 1,461 responses from musicians, vocalists, composers, songwriters, lyricists, producers and DJs. Some 30% of respondents said their earnings had been affected since the U.K.\u2019s official exit from the EU on Jan. 31, 2020. Of those whose income had been impacted by Brexit, 82% said their earnings had decreased. Musicians, DJs and vocalists were among the worst hit. Only 18% of music creators said their incomes had improved post-Brexit. And, 43% of those hit by Brexit said it was no longer viable for them to tour EU nations.<\/p>\n

\n\tEgypt\u2019s El Gouna Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0(Oct. 13-20) has unveiled a new initiative as part of its CineGouna Platform\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 the CineGouna Market<\/strong>. The market will serve as a workspace for practitioners in the Arab film industry, including producers, distributors, sales agents, and VOD platforms. Booths within the market will serve as a platform for showcasing the lineups, projects, infrastructure, services, new technologies and initiatives of these organizations and institutions.\u00a0It will also feature a short film lounge.<\/p>\n

APPOINTMENT<\/h3>\n

\n\tPolly Cochrane<\/strong>, former EVP and country manager at WarnerMedia U.K. and Ireland, has joined the U.K.\u2019s National Film and Television School <\/strong>governing board. Cochrane, who spent 13 years at WarnerMedia and is currently a partner at executive coaching company The Alexander Partnership, will lend her marketing and communications experience to the board, which includes BBC CCO Charlotte Moore<\/strong> and Amazon Studios EDI head Miranda Wayland<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
