From “Bikini Bottom” to the VMAs stage. Ice Spice has emerged triumphant with her very first Moon Person at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards in the fan-voted best new artist category.
The Bronx-born bisexual rapper walked into the ceremony with four nominations, including two in the “Song of Summer” category for a pair of collaborations: “Karma” with Taylor Swift and “Barbie World” alongside Nicki Minaj, who hosted the ceremony. These were Ice Spice’s first VMA nominations, capping off a banner year for the breakout artist.
In her acceptance speech, Ice Spice thanked her manager, as well as her record label, but she reserved a special shout-out for her fans. “I just want to thank my Munchkins,” she said, referencing the name for her fanbase. “I love you guys so much.” She also shouted out her Bronx hometown, adding, “Period.”
Other nominees in the best new artist category included Mexican musician Peso Pluma and singer Reneé Rapp, as well as rappers Kaliii and GloRilla. R&B singer Pink Pantheress, who scored a Billboard hit with “Boy’s a Liar Pt.2” alongside Ice Spice, was also nominated, though only Pluma, Rapp, and Ice Spice ended up advancing to the three-artist shortlist for the award.
In 2023 alone, Ice Spice has scored three top 10 singles, including her aforementioned collabs with Pink Pantheress and Minaj, as well as her single “Princess Diana,” also a collaboration with Minaj. In January, Ice Spice released her debut EP, Like ..? to critical acclaim.
In June, the out rapper told Teen Vogue specifically that she loves making music for her LGBTQ+ fans. Asked who her music was for, she said, “I wouldn’t say girls, specifically, because the gays love me. And I love the gays.”
Recent past winners in the bewst new artist category include megastars such as Grammy winner Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, and bisexual former Disney star Dove Cameron, who won in 2022 and scored another VMAs win this year for her feminist-themed “Breakfast” video.
