South Africa formally accuses Israel of actively breaching the United Nations’ 1948 Genocide Convention, which was established in the aftermath of the Holocaust. South Africa’s legal team, led by lawyer Vaughan Lowe, has initiated legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in Hague urging an immediate halt to Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip. The team pinpointed the historical injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people since 1948, emphasizing forced displacement, denial of self-determination, and the implementation of an apartheid-like regime by Israel.
They presented compelling evidence detailing the extensive civilian casualties caused by Israeli bombings, with over 6,000 bombs deployed weekly in the initial three weeks alone. The team accused Israel of violating the Genocide Convention, listing specific acts such as leaving 60,000 Palestinians wounded, a collapsed healthcare system, and the deliberate displacement of 85% of Gazans.
Adila Hassim, an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, highlighted the calculated nature of Israel’s actions, including genocidal evacuation orders and the deliberate deprivation of humanitarian assistance. The first hearing, held at The Hague, marked the beginning of legal proceedings, with a second hearing scheduled for Israel’s defense.
