Hamas released a video of a 21-year-old French-Israeli woman, Mia Schem, who they claim is being held hostage in the Gaza Strip, shares CNN.
In the video, Mia Schem, 21, reveals that she suffered an arm injury and was brought to Gaza. Her family approved the publication and broadcast of the video. This marks the first video release by Hamas of any of the hostages in Gaza.
Israeli authorities estimate that 199 people are held in Gaza. A Hamas representative suggests that the number may range from 200 to 250 captives across the strip.
The Israel Defense Forces have informed Schem’s family about her kidnapping and are maintaining contact with them. They are using all available intelligence and operational resources to secure the release of the abductees while criticizing Hamas for presenting itself as a humanitarian organization despite its alleged involvement in violent acts, including the kidnapping of innocent individuals.
A representative of Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ militant branch, affirmed their commitment to protecting hostages and releasing those with foreign citizenship when the opportunity arises on the ground.
Mia Schem’s mother, Keren Schem, expressed relief upon seeing the video, believing her daughter to be alive. She noted that Mia had undergone surgery and was in pain but stable.
Keren Schem had suspected her daughter’s abduction since the onset of Hamas attacks on October 7, and her family has been working independently to secure her return, including establishing a communication center for this purpose.
