Gaza/Jerusalem – In the ensuing mayhem caused by the Hamas-led attack on Israel, many people found themselves engulfed by terrifying decisions and unprecedented turn of events. Among them is a middle-aged woman from Israel’s Kibbutz Holit community named Avital Aladjem. Speaking to an Israeli free-to-air TV media, Channel 12, Avital narrated the harrowing story of her abduction along with her friend Adi’s children at the hands of Hamas terrorists.
The ordeal started when Palestine-affiliated Hamas gunmen stormed the Kibbutz communal village, a traditional farming community. Aladjem had taken charge of her friend Adi’s children who were left under Aladjem’s care after being tragically separated from their mother, who has been missing since Saturday. The group were hiding in Aladiem’s house when the gunmen shot and killed her neighbor and took them as captives.
“They took me and the kids out of the house and led us to the fence that surrounds the Kibbutz,” Aladiem recounted, her voice trembling grieving the distressing memories of the anguish. The abductors held the woman and children and approached a breached fence, escorting them toward the menacing doorstep of Gaza.
After reaching Gaza, the terrorists abandoned Aladjem and the kids. Aladjem made the decision to cautiously retreat from the conflict area with the kids. They hid in the sand dunes while Hamas patrols drove by on their way back home to Kibbutz.
The coordinated onslaught on October 7th by Hamas-led gunmen caught Tel Aviv by surprise after several months of escalating tensions over cruelty at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque – a holy Muslim place at the center of Jerusalem. Situated at the exact point as Temple Mount that is admired by Jews (Israeli), the ongoing discontent of the Israeli occupancy of Palestine lands has led to speculation that the violence over Al-Aqsa Temple and continued occupancy of Gaza by Israeli forces led to the onslaught against Israel to intimidate the Israeli forces.
According to Israel’s Government Press Office, Hamas has taken over 100 captives. Women, children, and the elderly were among those taken, and they are believed to have been dragged to Gaza.
The Hamas extremist movement has been active since 1987, when the group formed at the start of Palestinian Intifada. Headed by Ismail Abdel Salam Ahmed Haniyeh, Hamas is an Islamic military group and a Palestinian political force that rules over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. However, the movement is renowned for its armed revolt against Israel. Gaza, which the group controls, receives funds in form of humanitarian aid from international organizations and countries such as Iran. Most of this foreign aid and supplies end up in the hands of Hamas.
As the war enters the fourth day, Israel boasts of having reclaimed the Gaza border, hammering the territory with the most devastating air assaults in the seventy-five-year history of its battle with the Palestinians, defying Hamas Islamist militants’ threat to kill hostages. The death toll from Hamas’s onslaught on Saturday has increased to more than 1,000, according to Israel’s embassy in the United States. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 770 Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks.
