On Wednesday, the California Assembly faced disruption from the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace, demanding a cease-fire in Gaza as lawmakers reconvened for the new year. After months on break, legislators experienced only a few minutes of session before protesters gathered in the viewing gallery, unfurling banners with messages like “Jews say no U.S. funding for Israel’s genocide in Palestine.” The protesters chanted phrases such as “Cease-fire now,” “Not in our name,” and “Let Gaza live.”
Assembly member Jim Wood, D-Healdsburg, leading the proceedings, called for order, leading to a brief recess. While some lawmakers remained on the floor, most exited the chamber. The session was adjourned until Thursday after about 10 minutes, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
Dozens of protesters stayed behind in the darkened chamber, continuing chants after reporters, staff, and lawmakers were cleared. Outside, over 100 protesters filled the Capitol rotunda, laying a large banner on the ground to mourn Gaza casualties. Demonstrators kneeled in circles, creating black and red poppies to symbolize lives lost.
Although the California Legislature lacks an official role in U.S. foreign policy, the protesters, led by Jewish Voice for Peace spokesperson Liv Kunins-Berkowitz, called for lawmakers to pass a cease-fire resolution, similar to one adopted by the Oakland City Council in November. Despite plans for “mass arrests,” no arrests were reported several hours into the protest.
