A new California law is set to create an emergency alert system to help find missing Black youth and women between the ages of 12 and 25, according to CNN. Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 673 into law on October 8th, and it will go into effect on January 1st. The California Highway Patrol will be able to activate the new Ebony Alert system upon request from local law enforcement when a Black youth or young Black woman is reported missing under unexplained or suspicious circumstances, is considered developmentally disabled, cognitively impaired, or at risk, or has been abducted. A Japanese court has declared that the law requiring surgery for a legal gender change on family registries is unconstitutional, reports Kyodo. This is a complete reversal of The Act on Special Cases in Handling Gender Status for Persons with Gender Identity Disorder which required people wishing to legally change their gender to have ‘no reproductive glands.’ The decision to reverse the law was made after a transgender man in central Japan filed a request to change his gender without undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Female surgeons have higher success rates for delivering their patients safely out of the operating room, according to a new study in JAMA Surgery. Patients who had a female surgeon had lower rates of complications – including death – after their operations, compared to those treated by male surgeons. Patients who were treated by male surgeons were 25% more likely to die within 90 days of surgery, according to Stat News.
